Known for its cool climate and scenic hilly location, Bamenda, capital of the North West Region, is one of the largest Anglophone towns of Cameroon. It is populated with over 500 000 people and is a merger of the villages of Mankon, Mendakwe, Nkwen, Bali, Bambili and Santa.
As a regional city, Bamenda has several markets, banks, schools and higher institutions of learning, hotels, transportation service providers and health facility providers.
The city has cultural and geographical sites like the handicraft center, the hilly Sabga region with two small but remarkable waterfalls, the Mankon and Bali Fons' palaces and the century-old German Fort.
Even though many of its citizens are English-speaking, Cameroonian pidgin English remains the dominant language on the streets, shops and in the market.
One of the few cities having preserved its traditional kingdom within the pressure of politics and modernity, Bafut is a real symbol of the African traditional political system. It is situated at about twenty kilometers northwest of Bamenda. The traditional government is headed by a Fon and a local government council created by a presidential decree, which aims to turn Bafut into an eco-city. This is one of the two only regions in Cameroon where traditional power structures are still in place.
The first palace of the Fon, built over 400 years ago still stands and holds the tombs of the first three kings of Bafut. The present palace, built over 200 years ago stands as a testament to the city’s solid tradition. This palace is now a UNESCO World Heritage center and contains a museum. Within the city center is a botanical garden.
The population of over 100 000 is mainly agrarian. The local Bafut language is widely spoken, but several educational facilities run in the city. As a result, many of its inhabitants have learned the English language. Cameroonian Pidgin English is also widely used.
The city is graced with hotels and restaurants whose services are tailored mainly towards visitors and tourists. At the heart of the city is the iconic Saddle Hill Ranch having services and facilities like luxurious accommodation, a restaurant, hiking services, camping, quad biking, horse riding, a swimming pool and a Jacuzzi.
